Synopsis:
Welcome to the Way Down. Hadestown is a haunting, soulful reimagining of the ancient Greek myths of Orpheus and Eurydice and Hades and Persephone, transposed into a world that feels like a Depression-era New Orleans jazz joint welded to a gritty, industrial underworld. Winner of 8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album, this through-sung masterpiece by singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell is a "sad song" that we sing anyway—a testament to hope, labor, and the power of art in the darkest of times.
The story follows the young dreamer Orpheus, a penniless musician who believes his song can restore balance to the world, and the practical, hungry Eurydice, who descends into the mechanical "company town" of Hadestown in search of security. Guided by the silver-tongued messenger Hermes and shadowed by the three mocking Fates, the production is famous for its Tony-winning lighting and a vibrant onstage band that blends folk, blues, and scorching brass. It is a defiantly hopeful theatrical experience that pits the warmth of the seasons against the cold steel of industry, asking us how we build the wall—and why we must try to tear it down.
