Synopsis:
The game is back on. Nearly forty years after its original Broadway debut, Chess returns in a definitive new revival that transforms the Cold War into a high-stakes, rock-opera masterpiece. Set against the backdrop of the World Chess Championship, the story follows the explosive rivalry between the arrogant American superstar Freddie Trumper (Tony winner Aaron Tveit) and the disciplined Soviet challenger Anatoly Sergievsky (Nicholas Christopher). Caught in the crossfire of their political and personal war is Florence Vassy (Lea Michele), the brilliant strategist who must choose between her past, her country, and her heart.
Featuring a legendary score by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA and EGOT winner Tim Rice, this production features a brand-new book by Danny Strong (Dopesick, Empire), which heightens the political intrigue and adds a witty, meta-narrative guided by The Arbiter (Bryce Pinkham). From the neon-lit streets of Thailand in "One Night in Bangkok" to the soaring emotional heights of "Anthem" and "I Know Him So Well," Chess is a breathtaking exploration of how individuals become pawns in a global game of power.
